The current young hotshot of Formula 1, Red Bull Racing’s Sebastian Vettel, may soon have a reason to look over his shoulder. Following in his footsteps is another Red Bull Junior coming good.
Though still only 19, Jaime Alguersuari has already won the British F3 championship at the first attempt, and followed on from that achievement last year with a place in World Series by Renault. And now the Spaniard has become the reserve driver for both Red Bull F1 outfits, RBR and Scuderia Toro Rosso, effective from the next grand prix meeting at the Nürburgring. But, not surprisingly for an ambitious young driver already taking huge strides forwards, this is not all he’s thinking about:
“My main objective for 2010 is to race with Toro Rosso,” Alguersuari told Diario AS. “The next season could be the right moment for F1.”
Alguersuari has previously expressed his desire to drive for the Toros, saying it would be “the best”, and is also keen to prove wrong his detractors, who believe he has been elevated too quickly because of his father’s standing in world motorsport, not his own raw talent – Jaime Alguersuari Snr runs the World Series by Renault in which Jaime Jnr is currently driving for the Carlin Motorsport team.
“The one who has to drive is me,” Alguersuari points out. “My father has been very important in my life, but it is not possible to deceive Red Bull or anyone else who has supported me,” he added.
And Alguersuari already has experience of deputising on the big stage, having been called up as a late replacement for the injured Mark Webber in last year’s Race of Champions at London’s Wembley Stadium.
