Every summer, Chicagoans gather on the shores of Lake Michigan for the spectacular fireworks of Venetian Night – an evening pageant of illuminated boats, music and fireworks – but this year Renner will give them a fire and light show with a difference.
In July last year, the freestyle motocross veteran and X Games gold medallist jumped 18 metres (59 feet, 2 inches) off a quarterpipe in Santa Monica. Now he will attempt to go higher by launching himself from a massive purpose-built steel landing ramp measuring 19.5m (64 feet) wide and (9m) 30 feet high.
“While I was thrilled with being able to set the initial world record last year, I know I can push myself to achieve a better height, and Chicago is one of the best places to be in the summer,” said Renner.
“Plus it added another component to my training regimen – I need to train my stomach to prepare for Chicago cuisine; especially the deep dish pizza!”
As well experimenting with pizza, the daredevil, who entertained Wembley with the X Fighters at the Race of Champions last year, has been training for the jump at the Red Bull Compound in Southern California using a modular quarterpipe tailored for the purpose.
